House of Fraser announce closure
The Chamber of Trade and Commerce had no advanced warning of the House of Fraser news to move out of the building on the Skipton High Street. With the current market conditions for reduced footfall many larger retailers are taking the decision to streamline their operations and we are sure this decision was not taken lightly.
The membership of the Chamber is made up of devoted BD23 businesses, committed to working together to champion local business and assist one another with advice. Membership is a choice and made up of businesses and organisations large and small who represent themselves individually, but come together collectively to offer support and advice to one another. The executive’s immediate concern from the news announced is for those who live and work in the area and for an iconic building in the town centre.
Wendy Lawson, Co-ordinator of the Chamber said of the news: “Personally, I have shopped at the Rackhams store for decades. While it's been a valued part of our thriving high street, it has seen a reduction in numbers of people shopping there, so the parent company has had to make a difficult decision. However, on a professional level and considering the impact on the town, our hearts reach out to the people who are employed there and the adjustments they have to make. I would hope that together, the Chamber, alongside other agencies and organisations within this vibrant, thriving community, will come together to suggest a solution to utilising such an iconic building into the future.”
The Chamber of Trade and Commerce will be one of many local organisations and stakeholders who will work together to look towards a positive solution for the town. Skipton is regularly recognised as one of the happiest places to work and live and the community spirit is strong.
